Influences of Mediated Violence: A Brief Research Summary
Different parties turn to Nordicom and the Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media with questions on the influences of especially mediated violence. From time to time the Clearinghouse has highlighted the main conclusions that can be drawn from research regarding such issues. In this publication, Dr. Cecilia von Feilitzen, Scientific Co-ordinator at the Clearinghouse, has attempted to classify research findings into a more concise form than is perhaps common. There are different types of mediated violence and different types of influences.

Freedom of Speech Abridged?: Cultural, Legal and Philosophical Challenges
Freedom of expression and freedom of the press has become an issue that creates controversies all over the world in a manner unthinkable at the beginning of the 21st century. Authoritarian regimes stifle free expression, and religious groups challenge its foundations. It is threatened even in democratic societies through escalated security measures passed under the pretext of securing just those basic liberties among which freedom of expression is central. These challenges are the backdrop for the publication Freedom of Speech Abridged?
Media and Monarchy in Sweden
Can an unmediated monarchy even be imagined? In today’s rapidly changing media, private and intimate aspects of monarchies are thriving. New as these phenomena may seem, and in some aspects surely are, relations between media and royalties have existed for centuries. In this book, scholars from a variety of academic disciplines put contemporary media-monarchic relations in historical perspective.
Manufacturing Europe: Spaces of Democracy, Diversity and Communication
This book brings together leading European specialists in theories of the public sphere, media and democracy. Integrating geographical, historical and multicultural approaches, it develops existing thought on public sphere and democracy. In particular, it focuses on three dimensions that reflect obstacles to the European democratic project.

African Media, African Children
African Media, African Children is the title of the tenth Yearbook of the International Clearinghouse on Children, Youth and Media. Over the years, we have focused attention on a wide range of topics, but this is the first Yearbook with a geographical focus, and a vast continent at that. A focus on Africa seems both timely and important. When issues about children and media are discussed, all too often the frame of reference is the media culture of the Western world.
Faroe Islands and Greenland 2008: Media and Communication Statistics
When we speak of the Nordic region, more often than not we are referring to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. But the region also includes the Faroe Islands and Greenland to the west. The West-Nordic economies and polities are quite different, both from each other and from the eastern Nordic countries. The populations are small and relatively young; distances are vast; climatic conditions are challenging. All these factors have formed vital and distinctive local cultures. This volume, Media and Communication Statistics.
Transnational Media Events: The Mohammed Cartoons and the Imagined Clash of Civilizations
In September 2005, a newspaper in Denmark published 12 cartoons depicting Mohammed, the holy Prophet of Islam. Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. All over the world, the cartoons – or interpretations of them – were connected to discursive struggles that pre-existed their drawing and publication. The cartoon event thus extended well beyond its immediate dramatic phase of spring 2006, both into the past and the future, and became at least a small landmark case of post-9/11 global media history.
Mediated Crossroads. Identity, Youth Culture and Ethnicity: Theoretical and Methodological Challenges
The book Mediated Crossroads focuses on family, young people, ethnicity and the media in the context of increasing migration in contemporary Western societies. The book includes studies covering both media use and reception. It reflects on the growing interest in ethnic minorities – both on the macro and micro level – within media and cultural studies.
Communicating Politics: Political Communication in the Nordic Countries
Modern politics is mediated politics, and the media constitute the most important source of information and channel of communication between the governors and the governed. Media and politics are thus inextricable linked together, with the media playing an important role in contemporary democracies and for political processes. While this is true for virtually all advanced democracies, there are still important differences between countries depending on, for example, their media systems and political systems.
Media Accountability Today... and Tomorrow: Updating the Concept in Theory and Practice
Tony Blair demands it, Reuters wants it, the Spokane Spokesman-Review practices some of it and scholars try to define it – media accountability.
The need for media accountability was formulated more than 100 years ago and made manifest with codes of ethics and ”bureaus of accuracy”. The Hutchins Commission used the concept in 1947 as a way to avoid government prescription of media content. The practice of media accountability has since been fueled by market expansion, looser regulation of public service and a technological facilitation of media/public interaction.
Medietrender i Norden 2008
Empowerment Through Media Education: An Intercultural Dialogue
Although media, digital and information divides do exist in the world, more and more people have access to a steadily swelling flow of material through many new channels. An interactive and mobile media society has grown up alongside the traditional mass media society. Passive media consumers are becoming active media producers. In the midst of these developments are children and youth. Many parents, teachers and policy-makers are concerned about the negative influence they believe media exert on young people. The media, however, are also valued as social and cultural resources.
From Public Service Broadcasting to Public Service Media: RIPE@2007
The core challenge facing public service broadcasting today is the transition to public service media. This understanding characterised discourse among participants in the RIPE@2006 conference in the Netherlands, the theme of which was Public Service Broadcasting in the Multimedia Environment: Programmes and Platforms. The contributors in this volume focus attention on issues of strategic concern and tactical importance in addressing the core challenge.
Children, Media and Consumption: On the Front Edge
Nowadays, young people are exposed to a steady stream of commercial messages directed specifically to them. Because of its powers of penetration, television still has a unique position as an advertising medium, but advertising directed to youthful viewers is more and more prevalent on the Internet and mobile phones, as well. The rapid pace of change in our societies regarding media technology, information processing, economy and consumption patterns are challenges for children and adolescents, while these changes often seem to be a threat to the older generation.
Ambivalence Towards Convergence: Digitalization and Media Change
Concepts of convergence and converging processes have triggered considerable attention and activities in media research during recent years. This has been an inspiring context for the discussions and analyses presented in this book.

Varje kapitel innefattar en utförlig tabellsammanställning med en inledande uppsats där medieforskare specialiserade inom det aktuella området fastställer aktuella trender i medieutvecklingen.
Ideological Horizons in Media and Citizen Discourses: Theoretical and methodological approaches
In which ways does the media discursively make sense of contemporary society? In which ways does the public, through the media, deal with and negotiate ongoing changes in society? How can we study this?
