Mediesverige mini 2012

Ulrika Facht (red.)

Mediatization and Religion: Nordic Perspectives

Mia Lövheim, Stig Hjarvard (red.)

This book presents new research on the changing relationship between the media, religion and culture from a Nordic perspective, while engaging with the theory of the mediatization of religion. In contemporary society, news journalism, film and television series, as well as new digital media, provide critical commentary on religion while also enabling new forms of religious imagery and interaction. Religious leaders, communities and individuals reflexively negotiate their presence within this new mediatized reality.

Regaining the Initiative for Public Service Media: RIPE@2011

Jeanette Steemers, Gregory Ferrell Lowe (red.)

Public service media is today challenged on every front. Publics and politicians see the commercial approach as the ‘normal’ way to organise broadcasting. There are strong pressures to downsize PSM organisations, to limit investment options, to restrict online and digital operations, to narrow remits to genres and for audiences that are not commercially attractive, and for increasingly intrusive assessment procedures. The principles no longer resonate very widely and there is growing criticism about a decline in distinctiveness.

Scandalous!: The Mediated Construction of Political Scandals in Four Nordic Countries

Sigurd Allern, Ester Pollack (red.)

The purpose of this book is to spotlight the way in which political scandals in four Nordic countries have been launched, directed, dramatized and interpreted through different genres of journalism – in an interactive tug-of-war between editors and various political actors. News institutions help to build political careers – and to tear them down. A mediated scandalization process can make the path from power to powerlessness, from a top position to exclusion, very short.

We Love to Hate Each Other: Mediated Football Fan Culture

Thore Roksvold, Roy Krøvel (red.)

Football fans are often portrayed as enthusiastic, loyal, critical and sometimes violent. But what is it about football that appeals to them? How do the media – newspaper, radio, TV, blogs and web forums – accommodate the needs of fans, and what connections – if any – is there between the imagined community of football fans and the broader society? These are the questions explored by 20 well-known and merited researchers from 8 countries in this anthology about the mediation of football fandom.

Exporting the Public Value Test: The Regulation of Public Broadcasters’ New Media Services Across Europe

Hallvard Moe, Karen Donders (red.)

Public service broadcasters across Europe are venturing into the digital world, launching niche TV channels, building extensive websites, developing commercial services, entering into partnerships with external actors, and exploring new ways to reach users, whether its through smart phone apps or screens in public spaces. Such endeavours intensify fundamental discussions about what we need public service media institutions for. These are complex discussions, building on history, encompassing new technology, and involving a range of strong stakeholders.

Elza Dunkels, Olle Findahl, Cecilia von Feilitzen (red.)

Maria Zuiderveld, Gunnar Nygren

Small Among Giants: Television Broadcasting in Smaller Countries

Christian S. Nissen, Gregory Ferrell Lowe (red.)

Big countries and major markets are often proposed as models for TV broadcasting everywhere. This is evident in the development of European media policies and strategic renewal. It is taken for granted that such offer suitable and desirable models for smaller countries. This book questions that assumption on the basis of empirical research. Does a media market in a country with a few million people and far less GDP have the same opportunities as countries with many times the population or wealth? Does the same logic apply in all cases?

Communicating Risks: Towards the Threat Society

Stig A. Nohrstedt (red.)

Communicating risks is an increasingly complicated task in contemporary society. Risks travel physically as well as discursively between continents, countries and cultures. Globalization itself has actualized new alleged risks in politics, media and public debates. Globalization and conflicts have become major issues. The growth of xenophobia and populism of various kinds has lead to dramatic changes in geographical and mental maps. In what direction globalization will take us depends on how the media portray the possibilities and problems associated with it.

Diversity in Theory and Practice: News Journalists in Sweden and Germany

Heike Graf (red.)

Research on media and diversity has mainly focused on content analysis, or more precisely, on how immigrants are covered by the mass media. This book concentrates on the media workers themselves, and on mass media organizations. News journalists with immigrant backgrounds responded to interview questions such as: How do journalists with immigrant backgrounds experience their working conditions, career possibilities, and their possibilities of influencing media coverage? and How does ethnic diversity contribute to a change in the media coverage?
